The Moravian Movement as a Factor of Religious and Cultural Innovation in the 18th Century

The Moravian Church (Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine) is probably the most important church formation within the international reform movement of Pietism in the 17th and 18th centuries. The “Brüdergemeine”, founded under the direction of Reichsgrave Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760), owes its persistent influence to a large extent to the high degree of activity and mobility on the one hand and a number of attractive theological, liturgical and organizational innovations on the other. In particular, this includes an innovative concept of the church, which also meant renouncing the formation of one's own denomination, a redefinition of the gender relationship, an understanding of mission, which accepted the cultural and social identity of its addressees in one for the 18th century a considerable measure, and a number of new religious practices and forms of worship. The conference would like to bring the diverse interdisciplinary research of the past decades with each other into conversation. It will mainly deal with the following topics.
